Interracial dating has been on the rise since 1967, when miscegenation laws were overturned in the United States. According to Pew Research, it grew from 3% of all newlywed couples to 17% in just 50 years. Despite the growth of both intercultural and interethnic couples, there is still very little information available.
Our passion is international dating (especially cultural differences in dating and cross-cultural psychology), but often interracial dating is a huge part of it.
Therefore we feel it is important we cover that too.
If there is anything you are looking for, but we missed it out below, please do let us know and we will update it.
If also have a separate article dedicated purely for international dating.
The History of Interracial Relationships
The history of interracial relationships and marriage in the United States has been a long and rocky one. In fact, as late as 1967, many states still had laws banning interracial marriage. The Lovings were a married, interethnic couple who had been sentenced to a year in prison in Virginia for marrying each other. Read their amazing story and how they changed interracial relationships for all of us!
When did interracial marriage become legal?
America finally allowed interracial marriage in 1967, when the Supreme Court declared anti-miscegenation laws were unconstitutional. The ruling came after 16 states had already repealed their anti-miscegenation laws.
Glossary

What is the difference between interracial, intercultural, and international dating?
Couples can be purely in interracial, intercultural, or international relationships or in a mixture of two or all three. Interracial relationship means dating someone from a different race. While intercultural dating means someone from a different culture (but it isn’t necessarily international – through borders).
What is the difference between race, culture, and ethnicity?
“Race” is usually associated with biology and linked with physical characteristics such as skin color or hair texture. “Ethnicity” is linked with cultural expression and identification. The term ethnicities is more broadly defined as large groups of people classed according to common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin or background.
